Pilobolus' "Shadowland" to be Staged at Byham Theater
The Pittsburgh Dance Council, a division of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, welcomes back PILOBOLUS in their newest theatrical project, SHADOWLAND.
Pilobolus’ dancers and directors collaborated with Steven Banks, lead writer for the popular animated series SpongeBob SquarePants, and popular American musician, producer and film composer, David Poe, to create this unique, intimate and exciting performance. Pilobolus will perform on Friday, February 10, and Saturday, February 11. Both performances will take place at 8:00 p.m at the Byham Theater, 101 Sixth Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15222.
Called “a triumph of ingenuity” (Huffinton Post) and “visually stunning” (Courier Mail), Shadowland is a first of its kind in the world of dance. Combining multimedia, projected shadow play, moving screens, and choreography, the performance depicts the surreal story of a young girl’s sensational world as she comes of age. The audience is transported into darkness, her dreams, and Shadowland, where dancers contort their bodies into wild configurations, becoming elephants, flowers – even airplanes.
Combining the fluid logic of a dream, the grace of dance, the humor of a child and heart of a love story, Shadowland celebrates the strange and wonderful power of the dark in unexpected ways.
Since its debut, Shadowland has been performed live for over one million audience members, while a video of the performance has been shared on Facebook nearly 800,000 times.
Pilobolus was founded in 1971 by Dartmouth students Jonathon Wolken, a Pittsburgh native, Moses Pendleton and Steve Johnson. The three has no dance training and no interest in classical dance technique, but brought an inventive energy that continues to infect all Pilobolus performances.
Now based in New York City, Pilobolus has created and toured over 120 pieces of repertory to more than 65 countries. In recent years, Pilobolus has been featured on many. Television programs, including the 79th Academy Awards Broadcast, Sesame Street, Oprah, Ellen and 60 Minutes. The company has been recognized with numerous honors, including a Scripps Award, a TED Fellowship and a Grammy Award nomination. Pilobolus was also named one of the Dance Heritage Coalition’s “Irreplaceable Treasures” in 2015.
Broadway World commends Pilobolus’ authenticity, stating “in a world of contemporary dance where many productions present abstract concepts with blank-faced dancers, Pilobolus serves to remind us that concept and movement can and should belong together.” Pilobolus has been presented nine times in previous Pittsburgh Dance Council seasons, most recently in 2010.
