Carnegie Museum of Art Teams up with Confectioner to Create Tasty Sculptural Likeness

Chocometti, a Sculpture-Inspired Confectionary by Sarris Candies

Carnegie Museum of Art (CMOA) announces a new collaboration with Canonsburg, PA-based Sarris Candies. The museum and confectioner team up this spring with the release of a chocolate figure inspired by one of the world’s most iconic works in modern sculpture, Alberto Giacometti’s Walking Man I (1960) which holds a place of pride in CMOA’s collection.

Cast in bronze, Walking Man I depicts a tall, faceless man with strangely elongated limbs, striding onward with a purposeful momentum.

“Walking Man embodies humility and humanity, but also the utter isolation of the individual,” said Catherine Evans, Chief Curator at CMOA. “The sculpture is a masterwork of force and movement. Plus, those long, lumpy limbs already look like chocolate-covered pretzels.”

Dubbed Chocometti, the new offering of dark chocolate with pretzel legs stays true to Sarris’s popular confections. “Chocolate pretzels are one of our strongest sellers, shipping all over the country,” said Sarris CEO Bill Sarris. “We jumped at the idea to take it in a different direction.”

Museum staff used 3-D laser scanners to create a digital model of the sculpture before translating the rendering to a flat chocolate mold, which they created with a 3-D printer. Careful attention was paid to preserving the emptiness surrounding the figure, which has been associated with post-World War II consciousness. Giacometti denied any specific reference to wartime atrocities, but he acknowledged the absurdity and fragility of human existence, saying, "Emptiness filters through everywhere, each creature secretes his own void." Honoring the artist’s vision, Chocometti will only be available in 72% dark chocolate.

An edition of Alberto Giacometti’s Walking Man set record prices for a sculpture at auction, selling for $104 million in 2010. Chocometti, a great masterwork in pretzel and dark chocolate, retails for $15.95 at Sarris Candies, Canonsburg, and CMOA Store, Oakland, beginning April 1, 2017.
